Using High Fat Low Carb Diets for Diabetes

High fat low carb diets have been used as alternative therapies for conditions ranging from multiple sclerosis to food addiction to dementia. For example, Dr. Terry Wahls designed her own ketogenic Paleo diet for MS. And recently, a child who had as many as 300 seizures daily found relief when his parents utlized a ketogenic diet when drugs failed. (Read about these cases by clicking here.)

But what of diabetes? As cases of type 2 diabetes escalate, can a low carb high fat (LCHF) diet help control blood sugar? I interviewed three experts who said “yes.”

Dr. Stephen Phinney, co-author of “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide to Making the Life-Saving Benefits of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable and Enjoyable,” told me: “Given both the healthcare costs and the medical risks associated with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, plus the immediate improvements (if not complete remission) in these diseases with a well-formulated ketogenic diet, this diet should be the primary (aka first) therapy that doctors and dietitians recommend.” Read my full interview with him by clicking here.

Professor Timothy Noakes once recommended a low-fat high carb diet. Now he’s a believer in high fat low carb diets after reversing his own diabetes. Learn about his story and the difference between high fat and high protein diets by clicking here for my full interview with him.

Franziska Spritzler, RD, CDE, is known as the Low Carb Dietitian for an excellent reason: She’s become one of the few RDs to champion low carb diets. In an exclusive interview, Franziska talked with me about using a high fat low carb ketogenic diet for conditions such as diabetes.

“I haven’t personally used LCHF ketogenic diets for cancer, dementia, or MS, but I have seen several people with diabetes experience remarkable improvement in blood sugar control after adopting this way of eating,” she said.
