Dr. Mehmet Oz has taken some hits recently after being grilled by the Senate for his repeated “miracle” discoveries of various not-so-proven weight loss supplements. However, he occasionally has redeemed himself through the years by highlighting practical ways to boost fat-burning and suppress appetite.
The following don’t involve pricey dubious supplements grown in the Andes. Instead, they feature foods and beverages you may already have in your kitchen, with studies to back them, and they all fit into a low carb diet.
First, let’s talk the fat-burning power of green tea plus garlic. Yup, you read that right. Dr. Oz says: “When the pancreas is overwhelmed and blood sugars are high, this organ isn’t able to burn energy efficiently and remove fat. An overworked pancreas can lead to fat storage, particularly stubborn belly fat. To invigorate your pancreas and eliminate fat, drink a cup of garlic green tea each day.” How to make this fat-flushing tea:
- Steep one green tea bag in hot water for 5 minutes, such as Bigelow Green Tea.
- Add 2 to 3 whole, peeled garlic cloves and let them steep for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Spoon the garlic cloves out.
In addition, Dr. Oz recommends vitamin C, which also boosts your body’s fat-burning abilities. He recommends a minimum of 75 mg of vitamin C a day “to help your body turn fat into energy and burn it off.” Our tip: Some vitamin C tablets are so large that they’re hard to swallow. Say hello to vinegar. Dr. Oz says that it can block fat from accumulating if you drink white vinegar after eating sugar and carbs. That drink can reduce the glycemic index of a meal by more than 25%.
